The New National Gallery was closed when we last came to Berlin and re-opened in 2021 after extensive renovation. It was originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. He was the last director of the Bauhaus, the 20th century school of modernist art, design and architecture.

The general exhibition is in the basement and was smaller than we expected. The first thing we saw were robots with realistic silicone faces of famous people: Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and the artist himself (Beeple). This was both amusing and spooky.

Otherwise there was a good mixture of modern art, including a Picasso.

We finished in the museum’s cafe, which was glitzy and stylish.
