Despite being the home of capitalism, the US has some of the finest free libraries in the world. One of them is Austin Central Library.
Spacious, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, the library was opened in 2017. It’s at the heart of the community and a sanctuary for anyone who wants to escape the outside heat or the high street for a brief or long respite.
Some of the highlights included: a large children’s area, which instils a love of reading through play; a giant chess set; comfy reading areas; a living rooftop garden, partially covered to protect you and your laptop from the rain; temporary passes for those passing through Austin; meeting rooms; friendly staff, and free internet terminals.
It’s everything a modern library should be. Our only equivalent in the UK (that I know of) is Birmingham’s Central Library.
