The Lake District is one of my favourite places to walk. I’ve been many times but the last time was about fifteen years ago.

Rain had been forecast for the long weekend we were there — and Storm Boelo! But as locals know, the Lake District has its own weather. I’ve been there when rain has been forecast and it’s been sunny. The weather on the peaks is especially unpredictable. One thing that was certain was that it would be windy!
Given the unsettled weather, we decided on a lowland walk first. It was a 30-minute drive from the National Trust cottage we were staying at next to Lake Windermere.

The walk, although not in the high fells, quickly brought back memories of previous visits. The beauty was there to see. And given it was a lowland walk, it was accessible to anyone used to the odd afternoon stroll.

Perhaps because I generally go on the highland fells that I’d not come across the unstaffed cafes. Or perhaps it’s a new development. These were several. Some were well stocked: soft drinks, kettles, teas, coffees, cakes, biscuits, and energy bars. Everything a weary walker would want! Each item had a price and there was an honesty box for payment.
This reminded me a self-service/self-checkout convenience store in South Korea. There was also a similar small shop on the “Joyful train” in Japan!
Visiting the Lake District made me reminisce about previous visits. I’ve created an album of a few photos from 2004/5.
