The temperatures for the next few days were forecast to be about 30°C. It wasn’t the best hiking temperature, but Helene’s work colleague recommended a hike in a nearby forest.
The Spirkelbacher Hollenberg-Tour, as the route was called, was well-signposted and easy to follow. Lucky for us, the path was almost all under the cover of tall trees. It was the perfect walk for a hot day like today.

For late afternoon and dinner, Helene had lined up a trip to a local wine festival. These, apparently, are common in Germany at this time of year.
When we got to Birkweiler, the town hosting the festival, it was fairly crowded. There was an upward movement, as people went to the festival, which was at the top of the hill.
According to the leaflet, there were five stations located around the vineyards. Each station offered different types of food. We walked around the stations and, eventually, settled for veggie burgers with chips. The burger was good and the chips were very tasty.
People were friendly and welcoming even though there weren’t many tourists. We liked the sense of community the festival generated.
