Workers of the world unite!

May 1 is a national holiday in Germany. It’s an important day for celebrating and protesting about the rights of workers.

Yesterday, our guide told us that Kreuzberg, in particular, was the centre of protests and celebrations. It’s a big day in the calendar. So we headed to some of the places he mentioned.

First we went to Alexanderplatz because we wanted to see how much it had changed since our last visit. This was also where the marches and protests were happening from about midday. Many people visit the area, especially to see the iconic TV Tower.

After watching a demo about workers rights and seeing speeches being made, we walked to the next place.

We took a scenic route, alongside the river, to Mariannenplatz, our final destination. As we got closer, we saw a rave, bands playing, dancing, and people having picnics. There was a party atmosphere.

It was getting hot and busy. So we moved away from the crowds and headed to a cafe, called westberlin. This was a modern cafe with outside seating on the roof.
