San Francisco architecture

One of the first things I noticed about the housing in San Francisco is how unique each house is. Initially I thought this was a characteristic of one street. The more streets I saw, however, the more I realised that this was true of much of San Francisco and, as I learnt later, of Berkeley too.

I met a retired Senior Emeritus Professor of electronics, who described the early history of California. One consequence of being a frontier state was that once people became wealthy they had houses built for themselves. These were built individually not en masse and few people chose the same design as their neighbour!
