Back in London at Mildred’s

Returning to London has been quite an experience. The most notable change is the temperature. The other change is the quiet. After three months of incessant noise in India, London seems a quiet place!

During my time In India, the average temperature was over 30°C. The last two days in Abu Dhabi averaged about 43°C. The temperature in London at the moment is 15-20°C. When the temperature reaches 20°C in London, some people are wearing t‑shirts and shorts. I, however, had to wear my winter coat and two layers of warm clothes!

It was a bright sunny day in London. We went to Coal Drops Yard in King’s Cross then walked along the canal to Camden Town.

One of my favourite London restaurants is Mildred’s. It has been going for decades. I first went to the only branch about 30 years ago. It was in Soho and always busy. They didn’t take bookings then. After a few years, the branch moved to its current location, in Lexington Street, also in Soho.

For many years, there remained just the Soho branch. However, over the past few years, five more branches have opened. My favourite is probably the Camden Town branch, which is where we went for a late birthday dinner for me. To our surprise, it has been completely redesigned. It’s more spacious and airy now.

The menu changes periodically at Mildred’s. They keep old favourites and change some dishes. There were two dishes we’d not seen before and we had those:

  • Souvlaki & meze: charred oyster mushrooms & cabbage kebab, sour cherry harissa, cherry tomato, pomegranate quinoa, soft herbs, tzatziki, tahini cream, olive mix.
  • Diosa verde salad & blackened saffron tofu: crunchy mix of peas, sugar snaps, broccoli, sweet, potatoes, celery in a creamy avocado lime dressing topped with charred corn, pin nut pepitas and candied jalapenos, saffron tofu steak.

They were as good as they sounded. For desert, we shared the sticky toffee pudding.
