Hay Bluff and Hay-on-Wye

Friday was probably the hottest day in the UK this year. We felt the heat walking up Hay Bluff. The photo of it doesn’t do justice to the steep (but short) ascent.

Hay Bluff circular walk

It was an enjoyable short circular walk before driving to Hay-on-Wye, the UK’s bookshop town. Living up to Wales’ reputation, Hay delivered spits of rain even on this hot day as we hopped between bookshops.

Hay-on-Wye is such a lovely town. I always enjoy visiting it. Apart from bookshops, there are many independent shops selling unusual items for the house. I bought a plant pot at The Old Electric Shop.

It can be difficult keeping up with the social distancing rules in England. In Wales, the rules are different, which is doubly confusing for English tourists and people living on the border. In Hay, people were sensible. All the shops required masks and limited the number of people allowed in.

Before leaving, we went to a pub (Kilverts Inn, outdoor seating only) and joined the long queue for Friday fish and chips at the friendly Hay Takeaway. My chips went down very well as the temperature dropped in the evening.
