Highgate Cemetery

A few weeks ago, there was an open day at Highgate Cemetery. I hadn’t been there for years. There are many famous people buried there. You can see some of the names in the map below.

It was sad to see the Karl Marx tomb, which had recently been defaced twice.

It reminded me of a recent trip to the excellent Don McCullin exhibition at the Tate Britain. I’d not heard of him. He’s a veteran British photographer of mostly black and white photos of war. It was a moving exhibition of his photos that showed the reality of human suffering during wars over the past 40 years without taking sides in conflicts around the world.

One of his photos showed the ruins left of the theatre in the Roman city of Palmyra, a world heritage site. It was partly destroyed by one side in the current conflict in Syria.
