The Pearly Kings and Queens

The Pearly Kings and Queens were out in force today. They looked majestic as they displayed their glittering mother-of-pearl buttons ornately sown onto their clothes. I was delighted to meet the Pearly King of Islington, my local manor.

I learnt today it’s a tradition for the Pearly Kings and Queens to donate food to the church as part of the harvest festival.

Do schools still observe the harvest festival? I wonder because when growing up we had to take food to school, which was passed onto the church who distributed it to those in need. It was an early version of the food bank. We, like some others, could hardly afford to give food away but all children were expected to donate food! I assume schools are now sensitive to this.
